Why am I still constipated when I eat fibre?

Constipation is one of the most common gut symptoms people experience, and one of the most frustrating. One of the things I hear most often is:
“I eat plenty of fibre… so why am I still constipated?”
And honestly, constipation is often much more complex than people realise.
While fibre is incredibly important for gut health, simply adding more fibre is not always the full answer, particularly if symptoms are already severe.
Most people still need more fibre
In the UK, average fibre intake remains well below recommended levels.
Fibre supports:
bowel function
the gut microbiome
digestive health
blood sugar regulation
cholesterol levels
overall long-term health
So increasing fibre intake is still an important goal for many people.
But how fibre is increased can matter too.
More fibre isn’t always immediately better
For some people, rapidly increasing fibre intake can worsen:
bloating
abdominal discomfort
fullness
constipation
especially when the gut is already struggling. This doesn’t mean fibre is “bad.”
More often, it means:
the increase has been too rapid
fluid intake is low
overall intake is inconsistent
symptoms are more complex than one nutrient alone
Gradual changes are often much better tolerated.
Constipation is often influenced by much more than fibre alone
Bowel function can also be influenced by:
meal patterns
low overall food intake
stress
disrupted routines
reduced movement
medications
ignoring the urge to go
inconsistent eating across the day
One pattern I see frequently is:very little intake through the day followed by a large “healthy” evening meal. Sometimes the gut responds better to consistency than extremes.
Gut health is rarely about perfection
Social media often reduces gut health to:“eat more fibre.” But real-life digestive health is usually much more nuanced than that. For many people, the goal is not “perfect eating.”
It’s creating:
consistency
enough intake
realistic routines
sustainable habits
eating patterns the gut can tolerate
Final thoughts
Fibre absolutely matters. But constipation is often influenced by the bigger picture too. Understanding symptom patterns, routines, intake, and overall lifestyle factors is often far more useful than focusing on one single food or nutrient alone.
